Why Turtles Live So Long
Turtles are some of the longest-living animals in the world. Figuring out their age compared to humans can be tricky because different types of turtles grow and age at different speeds.
How long a turtle lives depends on its species, where it lives, and how slowly its body works.
Turtles Grow Up Slowly
Unlike dogs or cats that become adults quickly, turtles take many years to grow up.
- Water turtles (like sliders) may become adults at about 5 years old.
- Giant tortoises grow even more slowly and may not become fully grown until they are 15 to 20 years old.
Different Turtles Live Different Lengths
-
Water Turtles (Sliders):
These are common pet turtles. Even though they are the shortest-living type in this group, they can still live about 20 to 40 years. -
Box Turtles:
These turtles live on land and age very slowly. Many live for 40 to 50 years, and some can even live for more than 100 years. -
Tortoises:
Tortoises are famous for living a very long time. Many live about 70 to 80 years, and giant tortoises like the Galapagos Tortoise can live for more than 150 years.
In general, turtles grow slowly, age slowly, and can live much longer than most pets.
